| Abstract | Multiobjective interactive decision making is the most
general framework f or water resources planning. The basis of the
interactive planning setup is the assumption that the preference
structure of the decision maker cannot be expressed analytically,
but can be assessed empirically as the result of learned
perception.
Within the framework of the present study, the attempt has
been made to develop an interactive multiobjective decision model
along these lines. It is designed to overcome some of the
disadvantages of the decision models applied at present. In
addition, it is a requirement to have a model with simple
structure to facilitate the understanding and practical
applications. A new approach, named Search Beam Method has been
developed to fit these requirements. In this method, the search
for the nondominated solutions is pursued along prespecif ied
lines representing hypothetical 'search beams' radiated from a
selected point in the objective space. Along these lines, their
intersections with the Pareto optimal surf ace are sought in a
seccessive search, following the Golden Cut rule. For a certain
set of objective achievements representing a point on the ' search
beam', the corresponding decision variables are randomly
generated in the decision space. It is then checked whether the
solution is feasible . The intersection of the 'search beam' and
the surface of the nondominated solutions is approximated in an
iteration process.
The viability of the Search Beam Method is demonstrated by
applying it to a hypothetical three-objective groundwater
development problem with 10 continuous decision variables. |
