| Abstract | The study was conducted in the Tha Maka subproject of the Mae Klang
Irrigation project in Mae Klang river basin, the south-western portion
of the Central Plain of Thailand. It was primarily concerned with the
determination of losses in the irrigation conveyance canals , land
preparation requirements and water use efficiencies. Moreover, factors
creating losses in the system were indicated and subsequently suggestions
for improvement are given.
The period of study was during the dry season in 1988 and t he results
revealed that:
1. The average conveyance l osses in main, lateral and sub-lateral
and tertiary canals were 0.422 m3 /s per km, 0.023 m3 /s per km
and 0.027 m3 /s per km respectively. The average conveyance loss
in the system was 0. 223 m3 /s per km (6. 20%). The average
conveyance efficiency was 93.80%.
2. The water requirements for l and preparation were 437 . 2 mm in 51
days.
3 . The water use efficiencies at farm and project levels were 31.9%
and 30 .0% respectively .
4. The main reason for losses in the system was that farmers could
receive much more water than necessary at any time they wanted
as the tertiary canal head gates could not be completely
controlled by the officials. (Because farmers could open the
canal head gates by themselves, especially in the night-time) .
5. Water user association improvement, increasing t he number of
RID field staff and their training in operation and maintenance
are extremely urgently required . |
