| Abstract | The speed of flood peak discharge in channels with overbank
flows areas is investigated. Based on dimensional analysis, the
speed of flood peak discharge is expressed as a function of eight
dimensionless parameters each raised to an exponent . These
dimensionless parameters are related to the bank full speed,
bank full discharge, widths of main channel and overbank areas,
bank full depth , conveyance, du ration of flood hydrograph, rising
time and falling time of hydrograph, slope of river bed,
Manning's n of main channel and overbank flow areas. By a curve
merging technique, the exponent of each dimensionless parameter
in the speed function are determined based on the results of
numerical simulations using finite difference method of implicit
scheme.
The function developed is tested with the file data of the
Song Hua Jiang River in 1984, 1986 and of Liao He River in 1974,
1975. Good results are found in the tests.
The subsidence function of flood wave developed by Tingsanchali and Lal 1988 is also verified with the same set of field data of the two rivers. The results are found to be very satisfactory. |
