| Abstract | A nominal degree optimum angle , revolving- knife sugar cane basecutter of 440 mm diameter, with four smooth- edged blades of twentyedge angle was laboratory- tested to determine the combination of basecutter rotational speed, tilt and blade oblique angle , the objective being to minimize the cutting energy expended per unit field area of cut cane. An apparatus featuring a basecutter of fixed vertical axis of rotation, driven b y a variable - speed electric motor, a winch-drawn trolley running on rails to feed cane to the basecutter at a pre - determined feeding velocity, and with facility for alteration of blade oblique angle and cane tilt angle was used. Measurement of torque on the basecutter spindle and the component of force opposing feeding motion, together with a knowledge of the basecutters rotational speed, the feeding velocity and the basecutters nominal diameter, enabled the computation of the energy expended in cutting a unit "field" area of cane . The results obtained indicated a tilt angle of about 27 degrees, an oblique angle of about 35 degrees and a rotational speed of between 600 - 800 rpm <knife peripheral velocity at the basecutters nominal diameter of between 14 - 1 8 m/ s) to be most suitable, with the feeding velocity being 0. 225 m/s. |
