| Abstract | The use of polymeric films to extend shelf life of
two important tropical fruits, banana and mango was studied.
Polyethylene films and bags suitable for packaging of fruits
were tested for o2 and co2 permeability. The respiratory
behavior of banana and mango was determined. The equations were
proposed to predict the respiration rate of banana and mango at
any o2 concentrations.
The mathematical models given by DEILY and RIZVI
<1981) were modified to obtain realistic package si2es for the
storage of fruits. Effect of ethylene absorbent and evacuation
of the gases in the packages were also evaluated. At 23 °c and
30 °c, five treatments with three replications of each
treatment were experimented for both fruits. The quality of the
packaged fruits was investigated.
The storage life of 2 Kg of freshly harvested banana
Kwai horn variety ) packaged in 44. 58 um thick polyethylene
bags of si2e 41 cm. x 51 cm., alongwith ethylene absorbent, was
found to be extended to about 12 and 22 days as compared to 6
and 8 days at 30 °c and 23 occ respectively.
No significant effect of evacuation was observed.
Effect of ethylene absorbent was found to be considerable in
delaying the ripening of banana and mango. There were no
significant differences in the quality attributes of the fruits
stored in the packages. |
