| Abstract | To provide information to designers of steering aids, the
steering performance of two identical cage wheels in puddled
paddy field was investigated. These cage wheels had the same
dimensions <580 mm diameter and 131 mm wheel width> as those of
the front wheels of a four wheel tractor (19. 4 kW>. Both cage
wheels had zero degree lug angle and lug orientation angle for
steering in wet land. Side force and rolling resistance of the
test wheel were measured for various slip angle, static vertical
load, travel speed and hardpan depth. All the tests were
conducted in puddled Bangkok clay soil.
The side force increased exponentially with the increase of
slip angle and tended to approach a maximum whereas the rolling
resistance increased linearly with the increase of slip angle.
However, the rate of increase of rolling resistance as a ruction
of slip angle was smaller as compared to that of the side force.
The increase in side force as well as the rolling resistance was
not in proportion to the increase in the vertical load. The side
force did not respond to to the travel speed of 1 km/hr.
However, for a travel speed of 1. 5 km/hr the side force increased
sharply. This trend was almost similar for the case of rolling
resistance also. Side force was found to be maximum when the
hardpan was approximately near soil surface and was minimum when
the hardpan depth was at 20 cm. However, the rolling resistance
showed an opposite trend against the hardpan depth. |
