| Abstract | A computer program in BASIC was developed to simulate the
performance of stand -alone photovoltaic systems . The simulation
was designed to ascertain that photovoltaic system reliability
indexes, i.e. cumulative loss of load hours (LOLH) over one year,
can be determined according to the meteorological conditions in
Thailand, consumer consumption patterns, array size and battery
size . The results of the simulation indicate that for a given
load profile , there exist several combinations of array size and battery capacity which meet a prescribed system reliability .
Economic analysis is introduced in order to allow for a
trade-off between array size and battery capacity to meet a
specified system reliability. The minimum cost f or meeting a
prescribed system reliability is found a t the point where the
marginal rate of substitution between array size and battery
capacity is equal to the ratio of the array price to the battery
The optimum degree of system reliability is thus determined by considering the cost of the system against the cost of running the backup power source, i.e. a diesel set, a given number of hours. |
