| Abstract | A study on energy uses in Rama Garden Hotel, an international hotel
with 372 guest rooms in Bangkok was conducted. Energy audit of the air
conditioning system and steam production system have been made .
In 1986, t he total energy consumption of the hotel was about 24.5
million MJ and cost about 10.2 million Baht. It comprises of 71.4 % electricity,
20.7 % fuel oil and 7.9 % LPG ; accounted for 89.9 %, 5 .6 % and 4.5 % of the
energy bill, respectively. The thermal energy sys terns which are air
conditioning system and steam generation system represented 73.08 % of the
total energy consumption and at a cost of 60.06 % of the total energy bill.
Energy and availability an a lyses were used to identify locations, types
and true magnitudes of waste energy, including reversible and irreversible
losses from the thermal energy systems. The heat loss with dry flu e , heat loss
from free hydrogen in fuel, h eat loss from moisture in combustion air, heat
loss due to radiation a nd convection, and irreversibility were 4. 79 %, 5 .65 %,
0.18 %, 2.09 %, 1.95 %, 71.13 %, for Boiler 1 and 7.57 %, 5.60 %, 0.28 %, 2.2 1
%, 2.11 %, 71.02 % for Boiler 2 . Opportunities for energy conservation in t he
thermal energy systems are identified, analyzed a nd recommended . Preliminary
economic evaluation of conservation measures have been attempted.
For the air conditioning system three energy conservation measures are
recommended. (a) Installing a valve to prevent the mixing of return chilled
water wit h supply chilled water can save about 22 ,500 Baht (0. 37 % of the
chiller energy cost) per year. (b) A new operation based upon the past
recorded data from May 1986 to April 1987. The possible saving is a bout
64, 100 Baht (1.04 % of t h e chiller energy cost) per year. (c) Operating the
smaller chiller unit during the cold season and from 1.00 am. to 6.00 am.
during the hot season . The possible saving is about 420,000 Baht (6.83 % of
the chiller energy cost) per year.
For the steam generation system, two energy conservation measures are
recommended. ( a ) More frequent operation of the boiler with higher
efficiency. The possible saving is about 9,316 Baht (1 .63 % of the boiler
energy cost) per year. (b) Better control of excess air. The possible saving is
about 10,428 Baht (1. 83 % of the boiler energy cost) per year. |
