| Abstract | In this study, the typical pressure drop vs. airflow rate
relations hips for various grains in a spouted bed were
investigated. Tests carried out with dry corn, rough rice and
soybeans displayed hysteresis typical of a l l spouted beds with
characteristic differences in the shape depending upon grain
type. Effects of bulk density, bed depth and column geometry were
evaluated for each grain . Experimental correlations between the
minimum spouting velocity, peak pressure drop and spouting
pressure drop were developed a nd compared with the equations
reported in the literature.
Spouted-bed h eating of paddy having initial moisture content
of 26 % wb, resulted in rapid moisture removal rates. The head
rice yields of paddy were adversely affected due to prolonged
exposure syndicating the desirability of multi pass continuous
drying with tempering .
Low moisture paddy could be heated in both conduction and
spouted bed units upto a final grain temperature of about 60°C
without marked effect on the head yields of paddy. However,
conduction heating of paddy appeared to b e preferable for better
mil ling quality than spouted bed heating.
