| Abstract | The Philippine transport system was analyzed and the trend
of energy consumption of the transport sector were studied. It
was found out that diesel consumption increased faster than
gasoline consumption especially in the public passenger transport
and freight transport.
Using an accounting model based on MEDEE -S developed by
Chateau and Lapillonne, the energy demand of the sector in the
year 2005 was forecasted. Based on the assumptions given in the
projection, most of the public passenger transport and 100% of
the freight transport by trucks will be diesel powered, while
passenger cars will continue to be gasoline dominated .
By considering that the price of oil will increase in the
future leading to the competitiveness of some biomass- based
fuels, the contribution of biomass, especially those that are
abundant in the country, were found to be substantial. Coconut
oil- diesel blend and alcohol - gasoline blend were the two biomass
fuels identified to have greater role in the future energy demand
of the transport sector. But gasoline substitution with alcogas
will exacerbate the problem of refinery imbalance so that coconut
oil - diesel blend will eventually have a bigger role to play in
the future. |
