| Abstract | This research aims to innovate slow sand filter process
in its purification capacity to treat surface waters for a
drinking purpose . The experiment was performed by using locally
available jute fabric to overlay sand bed . The filter was
operated at filtration rates of 0. 2, 0. 4 an d 0. 6 m3/ m2- h .
Jute-fiber h ad retained more than 86 percent of influent
suspended solids (SS) that increased the filter run of the sand
bed. However, jute fiber release d TOC a nd tot al solids (TS) t o
the filtrate that it resulted in l ow efficiencies in TOC an d TS
removal. Coliform bacteria were removed significantly but
Further dis infection was needed for drinking purpose. Also,
removal of iron and manganese were highly efficient. |
