| Abstract | The existing survey methods for collecting data for
transportation planning have been found to be expensive, time
consuming but not particularly accurate in some countries.
Given the limitations of time and cost, it is necessary to
develop a more economical survey method for updated data
collection in transportation planning instead of conducting
conventional survey.
Although there may be some approaches which can achieve
high accuracy and low cost, the utilizationĀ· of physical
information is considered one of the most feasible approach.
Physical information can be easily obtained from airphotos,
which are selected as the major data-source of this study.
Activity data such as population and employment, which are
essential in transportation planning can be reflected in
airphotos in an accurate and up-to-date manner.
In this study, a general methodology has been developed
by applying airphoto interpretation with the stratified random
sampling method. Using a digitizer, the x-y coordinates for
each building have been collected and construe ted into a
database of physical information. This database can be used
for estimating many kinds of activity data.
A case study is made to estimate the total population of
, a small part of Kashiwa city. Two kinds of sampling methods
are selected to conduct a sample survey on the average
household size. The results are quite encouraging with very
low levels of errors. The sampling survey is simulated ten
times by computer for five different kinds of sample size.
The results of these simulations are discussed with comparing
the errors in the estimation of the population, it is
concluded thatĀ· stratified sampling method based on the
physical database is better than other methods. |
