| Abstract | Bricks were made by firing the moulded green bricks in a
ferrocement incinerator by using rice husk as fuel. The
mechanical properties of bricks which were investigated included
the compressive strengths and absorption capacities of bricks
burnt at different temperatures and for various durations of
burning. In the second half of the research programme the well
burnt bricks were ground into powder and this powder was
used to replace 35 and 50 percent of cement by weight. Tests
for compressive strengths at different ages and resistance
against chemical attack of the burnt clay brick powder - cement
mortars were performed.
Test results indicated that the compressive strengths of
clay bricks subjected to different temperatures of burning
are influenced by the magnitude of temperature and duration of
burning. Higher temperature and longer duration of burning
increase brick strength. The test results also indicated that
the reactivity of clay brick powder increases with an increase in
the duration of burning. It is evident that the clay brick powder
ground from bricks subjected to a burning duration of 20 days can
be used as a pozzolana. According to ASTM Specifications, the
clay brick powder used in this study can be classified as
Pozzolana class N. Burnt clay brick powder can be used as a
partial replacement in mortar . When burnt clay brick powder does
not exceed 35 percent by weight of the blended cement, t he
compressive strength at 28 days is higher than that
of Portland cement mortar. Moreover, burnt clay brick powder has
a fairly high acid resisting quality especially when sulphuric
acid is involved. Due to this acid resisting quality it may be
advantageously used in an area prone to chemical attack. |
