| Abstract | This study presents an efficient scheme to solve quasi-static load
transfer problems of a circular elastic embedment in a multilayered saturated
half space. Firstly, solution schemes for a multi layered saturated half space
loaded on the surface by four types of surface loads are obtained by a finite
element analysis based on a variationa l principle. The four types of loads
considered are vertical, horizontal, ~oment and 'torsional loads. The original 3-D problem is reduced to a 2-D problem by applying Fourier expansions
with respect to the angular coordinate. The near field is modelled by porous
elastic finite elements while the far field is modelled by porous elastic
infinite elements chosen to represent analytically obtained far field
behaviour of displacements and excess pore pressures. Laplace transforms
involved are inverted by employing Schapery's formula. The same scheme is
used to solve the load transfer problem, the only difference being that the
modelling of the embedment is undertaken with impervious elastic finite elements. The applicability and the accuracy of the proposed scheme are confirmed by good agreement of results with existing analytical solutions |
