| Abstract | The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally
the temperature variations in mass concrete when rice husk ash (RHA) and fly ash are used as pozzolan. Temperature measurements
are made by thermocouples installed at various positions in a 60
c m cube specimen. The duration of measurement is made up to 1 2 0
hours after casting.
In this program, chemical composition and physical
properties of fly ash, setting time of fly ash and rice husk ash
cement pastes, compressive strength of fly ash and rice husk ash
concrete, and temperature variations in concrete having
different percentage of ash replacement were conducted. All tests were carried out in accordance wit h ASTM standards. The
main parameter considered in the experimental program is the
percentage of pozzolan replacement which varies from 0% - 35%.
The fly ash use dis taken from Krabi lignite power plant in the
south of Thailand.
Test results show that the use of fly ash replacement in
mass concrete resulted in a greater reduction in the peak
temperatures than rice husk ash. When the fly as h and rice husk
as h contents
respectively,
were less t h an 12 and 1 4 percent by weight
their effect on temperature diminished. A
substitution of ordinary Portland cement by fly ash retarded
while the use of RHA accelerated the rate of heat development
during the first 6 hours after casting. The use of fly ash in
concrete resulted in a lower compressive strength in the early
age, whereas the rice husk ash concrete exhibited more or less
the same strength as normal concrete . The initial and final
setting times o f rice husk ash cement paste were found to be
close to those of ordinary Portland cement paste, but there is an
evident retardation when fly ash was used. |
