| Abstract | The protection of groundwater resources has emerged in recent years
as top priority for natural management around the world. A ·numerical
model for the simulation of long term transient response in
density-dependent, two-dimensional solute-transport in a multi-layer
aquifer system has been developed, using finite difference solution of
flow and convective-dispersion equations. The model is applied to simulate the complete, transient response for a problem of seawater intrusion
in a confined aquifer, treated by several researchers and the agreement
between the results supports the applicability of the model. This model
is used to simulate the transient position of the salt-water front in the
Cutler area of the Biscayne aquifer near Miami.
The saltwater intrusion in a confined coastal aquifer is investigated when the aquifer is disturbed by pumping . Simulation of flow conditions in a leaky aquifer manifests the influence of leakage flux, and
causes increase in the flux at the seaward boundary . The mode l proposed
in this study considers two type of system for groundwater utilization,
(i) horizontal drains, (ii) vertical wells. The influencing parameters
have been evaluated in non-dimensional form and the feasible well location
is demonstrated to ensure the potable water supply.
The simulation shows that the equilibrium concentration of
saltwater, pumping from shallow depth is higher than that pumping from
deeper zone. The pumping in t he shallow area does not always discharge
permissible waters and contaminates the aquifer severely when instability
occurs. |
