| Abstract | To improve the design of rockfill dams a better understanding of the deformation characteristics of rockfill materials is necessary. As a step in this direction, the
compressibility characteristics of rockfill material is studied under a static load in a large-scaled oedometer. After giving a review and a re-assessment of the
published in formation on the development for large-scaled
oedometer, criteria and methods for the preparation of
representative samples, a nd the influence of some physical
parameters on the test materials are described. The
load-deformation and the time-dependent behaviour are also
studied. Then, the large-scaled oedometer is described in
detail. The classification tests for limestone rockfill of KHAO
LAEM DAM are 2.67-2.72 for the specific gravity, 0.38-6.00 Mpa
for the point load strength, 0.69- 0.90 f or the shape factor
and 0 .15-0.96 % f or the water absorption. The correlation with
other test data is explored. The oedometer tests were carried
out to determine the stress-strain characteristics of rockfill
Zones 3A and 3B of KHAO LIEM DAM as follows: Oedometer moduli of 46-100 Mpa; Large compressive strain of 1.83-2.YB % (1.83 % under vertical pressure of 115 t ; m2 , 2.Y8 3 under vertical pressure of 209 t/m2) on saturation. The coefficient of earth pressure, Ko, of 0.342-0.357 and the corresponding angle of
shearing friction of 41.1-40.0 degrees on the first loading,
The variation of Ko of 0.342-1.2 on the first unloading, The
particle breakdown of 1.4-6.5 3 (1.4 % under vertical pressure
of 115 t ;m 2 , 6.5 % under vertical pressure of 209 t/m2), and the coefficient of the permeability of rockfill vary between
1 .10 x 1o·z cm/second 1. 2 0x. 10-2 c m/ sec. Finally, the
thesis presents model values of the input design parameters
used f o r the finite element analyses to predict the settlement of KHAO LAEM Dam. |
