| Abstract | This study was concerned with the traffic congestion
problem at a toll station on the Sun Yat-Sen National Freeway
of Taiwan. Toll stations have become serious bottlenecks in
the freeway system during peak periods. Widening t he toll
plazas has been considered by the .freeway Bureau, but the cost would be high and the scheme not feasible. The tandem toll collection system is an economic method to ease the congestion problem at toll stations. At present, toll lanes are separately provided for
drivers requiring change and those not requiring change.
field observations were made at the Taishan toll station to
obtain vehicle arrival rates and servicing rates for both
single and tandem toll collection. Three computer models,
written in General Purpose Simulation system language , were developed to estimate the practical capacity of each toll
lane. From the simulation outputs, it was of un d that tandem toll collection could increase toll-lane capacity by about 40%. The scheme appears feasible to solve the congestion
problem at toll stations and may be useful for busy toll
bridge and toll roads, particularly in urban areas. |
