| Abstract | Subsidence, an unpredictive hazard causes damage to the
structure due to the differential movement of the foundation
and supports. The extent of the damage depends on the type
of structure and properties of soil. several structures in
the AIT campus severly damaged by the differential
foundation movement . Most of them are resting on the upper
soft clay layer. The damage from the several sites of the
campus are studied and analyzed to determine the cause and the remedial solution. A suitable foundation with a
protective measure is suggested tor every damaged structural
element with probable cost of the proposed aoa1f 1catiou. The
settlement observation including the response of various
structures, the effect of trees, canals and drains are also
included in this study. The effect of trees, canals and
drains are found as the major causes of the differential
settlement and damage to the structures. The nature and the
depth of weathered clay and soft clay were studied with a
series of Dutch Cone test in the campus. The actual.
elevation above MSL of the deposit shows that the pump and the trees have the effect on soil consolidation in the
campus. A future prediction of subsidence is mane with the
zone of different risk. |
