| Abstract | Energy analyses were made f or Thailand rice, corn and
sugarcane production . Calculations were made f or energy that goes in and energy that is obtained in return,
excluding solar energy. The methodology used was based
mainly on previous works in the literature with the values
used in energy accounting selected and modified whenever
possible to suit Thailand requirements. Every field
operation and material inputs for each crop production
system were identified. Only on-farm activities were included, from land preparation t o harvesting an d other
operations like threshing and winnowing, shelling, and
bundling. It takes roughly 708,663 kcal, 830, 584 kcal and 4,583,717 kcal to produce rice, corn a nd sugarcane, with energy returns of 8.3, 8.17 and 9.0 kilocalories f or e very
kilocalorie put in, respectively. Comparisons of the energy
inputs in Thailand rice and corn production with that of the
us showed how much less the energy inputs in Thailand are.
It is realized that present yields can potentially be increased and cropping doubled , although , these would certainly require addition al energy a n d material inputs. |
