| Abstract | This exploratory work investigated the operation of
long -tailed boats and the existing conditions surrounding
passenger travel along the klongs (canals) o f Thonburi, the
twin city of Bangkok. This is a first attempt to look in to
long-tailed boat operations and how the system interacts
with the rural community in achieving its travel objectives.
It was found that the long -tailed boat, as a public
transit system, is self-supporting and independently managed
by an informal organization among the owner-steersmen .
Operating schedules and arrangements are decided by the operators, without evident Government intervention.
The majority of the travelers were found to be captive, with no other readily available means of access to their homes and their destinations. Thus, they fall prey to malpractices, which are believed to be by-products of a
dwindling , profit - oriented operation . Ease of access and directness of service seem to be the foremost attributes of the boat service, though these
qualities are outweighed by service inefficiencies such as
long waiting period s for passengers intending to travel, and seemingly inequitable fares on some routes, as for inter-canal t rips. It is suggested that remedial measures should be
directed at preserving and upgrading the service, keeping
the cost within the reach of the rural community. Further
studies related t o this investigation are suggested. |
