| Abstract | An energy consumption model has been developed for the
Asian Institute of Technology's (AIT) Chiller Plant/Air
Conditioning System, in the light of the energy conservation.
The AIT Chiller Plant supplies chilled water for the air
conditioning units of the different building, the Administration
building, the AIT Center, and the Regional Computer Center. The
energy spent for air-conditioning has been fifty percent of the
total energy consumption annually. Thus, energy conservation should start with the Chiller Plant. The model developed in this study includes such parameters as the room temperature and humidity, ambient temperature and humidity, chilled water returned
and supplied temperatures, amperage, and the load factor. It
treats comfort level as a policy matter, that is, a reduction
thereof would be considered as a tradeoff to the corresponding
decrease in the energy consumed by the Chiller Plant. The simulation results can be used as a tool for the energy policy makers, the AIT Administration and the AIT Energy Conservation Committee,
and as a Chiller Plant operating guide to implement whatever air
conditioning policy is adopted. A sensitivity analysis conducted
showed that the ambient condition has a more pronounced effect upon the energy consumption than the number of persons inside an
air-conditioned space. This was done with the operating
principle of the Chiller Plant operator as the guide, that is,
he is adjusting the amperage of the compressor based on the
chilled water returned temperature. And the chilled water returned temperature is a function of the atmospheric temperature and the
load factor. |
