| Abstract | Journal selection is an important task for every library and is vital
in achieving the objectives of the library. The main reason for acquiring serials instead of books is that faculty and students depend on these
materials for the most up-to-date information. Scientific journals have been splitting into more and more specialized
sections, and it is becoming extremely difficult to decide just what should be included in the library. This study has been carried out in the AIT Library and Regional Documentation Center. A taut assumption has been made that the budget allocated
to the library for purchasing the journals would in general be inadequate. In the real world situation such an assumption would, of course, be realistic.
In order to help the librarian in decision making, the journal selection problem is formulated as a zero-one knapsack programming problem. The
objective function is based on the utility of the journal as a measure of its productivity and the cost of the journal. In this study a methodology for quantifying the utility of a journal is proposed. |
