| Abstract | The purpose of this investigation is to determine analytically the
uplift pressure and overturning moment on a dam resting on a porous
foundation of finite depth.
The equations for the uplift pressure and overturning moment were
obtained from a mathematical solution of the Laplace equation using
methods of conformal transformation. These equations relate the uplift
force and overturning moment to the geometry of the structure, depth of
the porous media and the upstream and downstream heads of water. The
equations for the uplift pressure and overturning moment were obtained
in integral form. Numerical results were obtained however by expressing the integral in finite difference form and numerically integrating
the equations over the base of the structure. The computations for both
uplift force and overturning moment were performed by the IBM 1620 electronic computer. The accuracy of the resulting values were confirmed J
by comparing the theoretically determined results with calculations
based on pressure distribution obtained from an electric analog model.
The form of computed results enabled design curves to be constructed
which relate the uplift pressure and overturning moment in dimensionless form with the geometry of the structure, depth of porous media and
the upstream and downstream heads. |
