| Abstract | This thesis presents (1) an evaluation and correlation of the
design methods used to determine the ultimate carrying capacity of
piles driven into Bangkok clays based on compiled data on existing
piles and (2)a laboratory investigation of the effect of disturbance and aging on the shear strength characteristics of the Bangkok clays.
In the investigation of the strength regain, the scope of the tests was limited to the condition at constant water content and void
ratio.
The shear strength characteristics of the Bangkok clays
both soft and stiff clays were investigated by testing at undisturbed
condition, immediately after complete remolding and 1, 4, 10, 28 and
70 days after remolding.
The soft clays which were tested by the
laboratory vane apparatus exhibited an average sensitivity of 7, and
the percentage thixotropic regain was about 90 per cent after curing
at constant water content for 70 days.
The shear strength characteristics of the stiff clays, which were divided into two sets designated
as Hl and H2, exhibited average sensitivity of 1.4 and 1.5, respectively.
The strength regains with time of the Clay Hl were not definite due to
different stiffness of the samples.
The percentage thixotropic regain
of the Clay H2 was about 20 per cent after 70 days.
The value of the second part of the research, in which various
dynamic driving formulas and the static formula based on the shear
strength of the clays were analyzed, was somewhat limited by the inadequacy of the pile data.
A method of evaluation of the pile capacity
based on the assumption that the clays resist the pile load by their
undisturbed, remolded and cured strength along the pile was investigated. |
