| Abstract | Oil pollution can arise from discharge of waste oily water from ballast and bilge tanks, from catastrophic spills due to blowout of offshore oil wells, from grounding or wreckage of tankers or from oily water discharges from coastal installations. The fale of oil in the
sea is outlines while the general effects of crude oil on the marine
organisms are summarized and the impacts on the fishing and tourist industry discussed briefly. While preventive measures are strongly recommended as the preferred means to protect the marine environment from oil pollution, also suggested are clearly stated and understood
contingency plans for combating possible catastrophic spills to a
practical extent. Outlined are the type of dispersants used and. suggestions for full studies for their effectiveness and effects on marine life before recommending for use in the tropical seas. Studies of the physical transport of water mass in the Southeast Asia region and particularly of the Malaysian Coast is stressed to enable an accurate
forecast of the movement of oil slick should a sizable spillage occur in this region. The effects of oil and of the chemical dispersants on marine organisms in the tropical seas are not well studied thus far.
A brief mention of some of the possible future ecodisasters due to oil in the seas and also of a lack of toxicity information is made. While it is conceivable that the marine flora and fauna in the straits of Malacca are under greater environmental stress due to heavy maritime traffic resulting in considerable amount of oil discharge into
the straits, the actual effect on the resources of the straits and their durations are not known. |
