AbstractTheoretical expressions for predicting the maximum spacing and width of cracks in reinforced concrete beams are derived. Photo-stress technique is used to check the validity of the assumptions made on the strain distributions in the theory. The theoretical predictions of crack widths are compared with experimental results and are shown to be in good agreement. The factors influencing the widths of cracks are identified and a parametric . study is made. Design charts are presented for predicting the maximum width of cracks in reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure flexure.
