AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the suitability of bamboo as reinforcement for concrete slabs on grades. It was considered necessary to investigate those mechanical properties of bamboo which were closely related to its use as reinforcement in the pavements. As such, the bamboo was tested for its tensile strength under dry and wet conditions, rate of moisture absorption, its dimensional changes with the soaking time and the bond with concrete under various surface treatments. The bond slip and bamboo stress relationship was studied to decide the permissible bamboo stress required in the design of bamboo reinforcement for crack control in the pavements. Pai Ruak variety of bamboo known scientifically as Thyrsostachys Oliveri Gamble, was used in the investigation. Design curves have been developed and certain construction principles recommended. Based on this design guide, an experimental bamboo reinforced pavement slab 10 ft square in size was constructed at the AIT Campus to study its behaviour under actual traffic conditions. A steel reinforced slab of the same size was also laid in series for a comparative study of their performance.
