AbstractA theoretical study on the method to approximate the incremental collapse load of framed structures in which the P-ti effect may be significant, is presented. First, formulated are the conditions that must be satisfied by the residual bending moment and the residual plastic hinge rotations. generated at the shakedown state of the structure. The P-6 moment is simply included when the equilibrium condition of a member subjected to bending moments, lateral shear forces and axial force is considered. The elastic response to the applied load is then formulated as a function of the residual plastic hinge rotations. A procedure for the computation of the incremental collapse load is presented by following a conventional kinematical method, and uniqueness of the solution is discussed. A numerical example is shown with taking a portal frame subjected to the horizontal and vertical loads, ·which has been analyzed elsewhere, and the validity of the assumptions employed and P-ti effect are discussed .
