AbstractA laboratory scale extended aeration activated sludge process with total sludge recycle and chemically assisted hydrolysis to treat Pepsi Cola industrial wastewater was run to investigate the overall performances and some operational parameters useful in designing. In order to ensure good separation of solids and liquids in the final clarifier, a portion of the mixed liquor was withdrawn for acidic hydrolysis and refeeding the hydrolysate to the system whenever the biological solids concentration in the reactor was greater than 6000 mg/l. The study was carried out for a period of 92 days and it was found that the biochemical purification efficiency (in terms of COD removal) was greater than 96.2% while an average organic loading of 0.093-Kg COD (Kg MLSS)-1 (day)-1 was applied. With a view to gain some insights into the operational parameters of a continuous flow extended aeration process, a study on the kinetics of substrate removal and cell synthesis was also conducted. The results showed that the kinetic parameters varied over a certain range and that the sludge yield Y and maximum growth rate µm will be decreased while the hydrolysis is practiced and the hydrolysate been refed to the system. Comparison of kinetic parameters for different wastewaters showed that all parameters are comparable in some sense. Also by substituting the parameters estimated to the kinetic model, a highly significant prediction on the effluent characteristics can be achieved. These facts in combination will support the wide application of the parameters found.
