AbstractThe feasibility of using solar distillation for the treatment of industrial wastewater was investigated. The equipment used was a modified moving bed solar still. The objectives of the research were to determine the effect of bed materials, feed wastewater quality and evaporation conditions on water product quality. Feed wastewater tested in the still include raw wastewater from electroplating wastewater, brewery wastewater, primary effluent from Pepsi Cola plant and secondary effluent from high rate trickling filter. Results show that bed materials has little effect on product quality and an dour free product could be produced from the feed wastewater except from brewery wastewater with mean wastewater temperature in the still ranging from 30.8°c to 46.2°c product produced using brewery wastewater feed contained significantly more organic contaminants than any other products. Product contamination by ammonia could not be avoided, if ammonia is present in the feed wastewater. Results also reveal that the daily distillation rate was in the range of 0.445""2,69 l/m2-day with radiation intensity of 1.54-6.04 Kw/m2-day. Because of low evaporation rate and the carry over of volatile contaminant in the distillate, wastewater treatment by solar distillation will have only limited application.
