AbstractThis research was carried out to evaluate t he performance of high rate trickling filters packed with four different filter media in treating combined brewery waste with BOD5 of 450 mg/l without recirculation. These four types of media tested were: 5-75 cm nominal size rock, 3.7 cm diameter plastic balls, corrugated PVC sheet s and finally the same corrugated PVC sheets but with their surface roughened. The pilot scale trickling filter packed to a depth of 2.05 m with roughened surface corrugated PVC sheets dosed at an optimum volumetric BOD5 loading rate of 5.5 kg/m\'.3 day gave an average BOD5 removal efficiency of 50 percent, which corresponded t o a hydraulic loading of 12 ffi3/ffi3 day at a designed input waste BOD5 concentration of 450 mg/l. At this loading level a weight of BOD5 removal of 3.0 kg/m3 day was achieved. Laboratory rotating tube filters were found to give better performance than the pilot scale trickling filters at similar loading per unit contacted area. A simple mathematical model was derived empirically in the form: Le = e -0.0085 Av D/qs 0.46 Li Where Li and Le are BOD5 concentration in influent and effluent , respectively. This model attempts to include the effects of specific surface area (Av), depth of filter media (D) and hydraulic surface loading (Q s ) at a constant temperature about 27°C. Among t he filter efficiencies predicted by previous design formulations the NRC formulation was found to be most applicable.
