AbstractStudy reported herein was conducted to study the sources and characteristics of a synthetic textile factory wastewater, and to evaluate feasible and economical treatment for the same waste. Wastewater characteristics were highly variable. Except sizing and desizing wastes, all the process wastes including the total integrated waste from the factory had low BOD and higher COD values. 59% of total waste was from dyeing sections and the pollutional load imparted by this waste was 60% of the total in form of COD. Batch treatability study entailed that only combined desizing and finishing waste is biologically treatable. Jar tests concluded for dyeing waste a COD (soluble) removal of 73% and colour removal of 98% at alum 200 mg/l, Kurifloc at 0.5 mg/l and a pH of 6.9 continuous chemical treatment confirmed the jar test results. Aerated lagoon was more effective in treating combined desizing and finishing waste. than oxidation pond. COD (soluble) removal in former at 0.04 g COD/g MLSS-d and 8 days detention was 73.2% was compared to the later at 87.7 Kg COD/1,000 m2-d which was 72.2%. The final COD (total) in case of aerated lagoon and oxidation pond at the conditions mentioned above was respectively 17.7 and 90.0 mg/l. The cost estimation concluded that a chemical treatment of dyeing waste and biological treatment of combined desizing and finishing waste with aerated lagoon is more economical than when oxidation pond is utilized. The running cost in case of former is ~0.234 per yard of fabric produced and 0.264 per yard of fabric produced in the other case similarly the initial cost is almost double in the later case.
