AbstractThe study in this dissertation endeavors to analyze the test embankment and excavation made at Nong Ngoo Hao a site near Bangkok, by the finite element technique. The soil parameters are determined from a variety of tests namely, Eield Vane Tests, Unconsolidated Undrained, Consolidated Undrained and Consolidated Drained Triaxial Tests. Compression test data are utilized for the embankment analysis while the excavation analysis employs the extension test data. The critical state models are also employed to predict pseudo elastic soil parameters such as Young\'s modulus and Poisson\'s ratio. The results of the bilinear analysis show that a factor of 0 .65 on the field vane strength is a good approximation to be used for the undrained shear strength. A modulus value of 250 times the vane shear strength predicts displacement in agreement with the measured values for the excavation, while a factor of 70 seems to be more suitable for the embankments. In the non-linear analysis it is found that the modulus values obtained from the consolidated undrained condition predicts the displacements as measured. This is observed for the excavation as well as the embankment. Pseudo elastic parameter derived from critical state models have been used in the embankment analysis to predict long term settlements. Pore pressures are also predicted using Skempton\'s and Henkel\'s solutions. They compare well with observed results. This confirms the validity of the stress distributions as predicted by the finite element analysis.
