AbstractLaboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the undrained strength of Rangsit Soft Clay and to some extent also of Rangsit Stiff Clay Laboratory tests comprised unconfined compression (UC) tests, unconsolidated undrained (UU) and anisotropically undrained (CAUKo ) triaxial tests under in situ stresses. Field tests consisted of vane shear tests and Dutch cone tests. Piezometers installed at different depths enabled observation of in-situ pore pressures. Field and laboratory data were compared with each other and straight line regression relations established. Within the Soft _Clay undrained strengths obtained from UC and DU-tests were of similar magnitude, while CAUK0 tests always resulted in higher values. Field vane shear strength was higher than DU-strength at shallow depth (i.e. < 6 m) and less for greater depth. The overall ratio between UU strength and field vane shear strength (i.e. UU /FV ) within the whole soft clay zone was 0.93 whereas the ratio between UU strength and CAUKo strength (i.e. DU /CAUKo ) was found to be 0.70. The relation between vane shear strength and cone resistance from Dutch cone tests (cone value) was found as : vane strength = con resistance 18.1
