| Abstract | From the stopwatch time study to the sophisticated techniques of operations research, the manufacturing industries have widely applied many valuable techniques of industrial engineering, However, the
principles and techniques of industrial engineering are universal and may be equally effective wherever operations are performed both in the
armed services and in the civil service, including the industrial as well as non-industrial sectors,
In addition, changes in manufacturing, modern social problems, and trends of governmental influence account for an increasing emphasis upon improvements in the production and management systems of service industries. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the feasible applications of industrial engineering in some non-manufacturing industries, consisting of agriculture, the
health service industry, transportation, marketing, and retailing. In agriculture, the author tries to illustrate the sound uses of these techniques to design and redesign farm-machinery, choose and utilize farm machines in an optimal way, simplify farm work, develop farm management and control efficiently many factors having an effect on agricultural
operation. In the health service industry, hospital administrators and physicians, faced by the problems of lack of staff, supplies, and complicated utilities and equipment, have turned to industrial engineering as a source of help. Therefore, this study will supply some various tools and techniques for
use to a varying extent in hospitals. The redesign of hospitals and equipment, revision of job-analysis, effective medical inventories, better
methods of staffing, the application of \'know-what\'? \'know-how\' , 1know-why1 ,
These are important. Some feasible surveys of these techniques will be studied in the field of transportation in order to improve the actions of loading, unloading, utilization of complicated equipment in transportation companies; also
in order to redesign more effective equipment and control labor expenditure,
choose the shortest way of transportation, design transportation systems,
control traffic and develop transportation management. |
