AbstractThe purpose of this study is to analyze the growth and structure of the metal-related industrial system of Taiwan District, Republic of China, during t he period 1967 through 1972 . The system consists of five industry group-t hat is , basic metal industry, metal product industry, general machinery industry, electrical-electronics industry and transportation equipment industry. Its structure was first analyzed in terms of distribution of legal organization, employment, capitalization, and production costs. The growth of the metal-related industry is then analyzed in terms of number of establishments , employment, fixed capital assets, output, gross value added and direct exports . An attempt was next made to identify the factors which affected the growth during 1967-1972 period. Analyses of the demand and supply of the metal-related industry were next made with emphases on its distribution to various economic sectors and its changes in demand and supply structure were made. Production performance with regards to the principle products of each of the five industrial groups are described. The strengths and weaknesses of the industry are examined. The structure and characteristics of the export-oriented firms in the metal-related industry with emphases on the capital structure and foreign investment were presented and discussed. Productivity measures on the industry were then determined. These included the labor productivity, capital intensity, capital-output ratio, skill intensity and total productivity index. For the purpose of having the totality view point of the metal-related industry, a preliminary system dynamics simulation model was developed to describe it.
