AbstractCyprius Carpio, an economically important fish in the tropic was used to test the toxicity of 4 heavy metals, 4 pesticides and one herbicide. The limiting D.O. for Cyprius Carpio was also investigated. All the experiments were done at constant temperature 30°C. It was found that Cu++ is very toxic to carp, the median TLm96 of Cd++ tolerance limit of 96 hours is as low as 20 ppb. zn-1+ and. Pb++ are 0. 16, 1.30, 1.05 mg/las metal respectively. Lethal concentrations after 96 hours exposure approach threshold concentrations for zn++ and Pb-I+ toxicity, but longer period of time is needed for cu-I+ and ca-I+ to achieve threshold concentrations. Endrin, a chlorinated hydrocarbon is the most toxic pesticide for fish. Threshold concentration for Cyprius Carpio is 0. 14 ppb. All of the pesticides and herbicides tested (endrin, D.D.T., dieldrin parathion and 2-4 D Na Salt) approaches threshold concentration after one week of exposure . Threshold concentrations of D.D.T., dieldrin, parathion and 2-4 D Na salt is 0.042, 0.02, 0.88 and 455 mg/l as active ingredient respectively. Chlorinated pesticides are more toxic than organic phosphate pesticides, and herbicide is less toxic than pesticide. The limiting D.O. for Cyprius Carpio ranged from 0.8 to 1.1 mg/l in an enclosed chamber with final co2 below 30 mg/l and a decreasing rate of D.O. of approximately 0.3 mg/1-HR.
