AbstractThe thesis was a survey of noise level and noise pollution level (LNP(A)) in Bangkok, caused by different sources, such as nearby traffic noise, distant traffic noise, industry noise,.., railway noise, boat noise etc. The purpose was to find out the pollution level caused by noise in different type of area in the city. It was difficult to divide the area according to the type of community such residential, industrial , commercial etc, since unfortunately there was no zoning in the city. Hence, all type of activities could be found mixed in an area. It was, therefore, decided to divide the types of area according to the predominant activities of the particular area or building, such as, house, government office, etc. The 10%, .50%, 90% noise level and noise pollution level (LNP(A)) were then measured. For industry, the noise level and noise pollution level were measured for their effects to the nearby community and these were compared with the background noise pollution without industry. The peak noise level for train and boat were measured corresponding to distance from sources, and applied as 10% noise level to the background noise in different type of area to find noise pollution level (LNP(A)) in· accordance with distance from sources. The results obtained from traffic noise predominance survey were compared to the Minnesota State Noise Standard (l972) It was found that in many types of area in Bangkok, the noise pollution was much higher than the standard such as street area shop in busy area, continuous block building house, noise sensitive building in commercial area, . etc. However , some type of areas, the noise pollution was lower than the standard, such as residential, government office, park etc., the· noise pollution was lower than the standard. Noise reduction is needed for traffic noise for such particular areas where· pollution was higher than the standard, since activities were mixed in every type of areas including those for residential purpose. Industrial noise survey of a. typical residential-industrial community showed impact of industrial noise to community environment. The industrial noise was high compared with background noise in weekend and weeknight. The railway and boat noise surveyed indicated very little effect on most types of area because of the high background noise from the traffic. But for some types of area such as residential or noise sensitive building in outer area, the effect was considerable
