AbstractThis research was aimed at the formulation of design and evaluation criteria for low-cost housing. User needs and functional requirements for low-cost housing are specified and performance concept used to formulate the criteria. The design and evaluation criteria were established for different physical subsystems of the housing system. Several minimum standards suggested in various countries were studied and used as the basis to specify the different criteria. An evaluation methodology is suggested consisting of the formulation of an evaluation matrix which represents the relation of the functional requirements of the user to each of the physical subsystems of the dwelling unit. To quantify the evaluation process the methodology includes the determination of indices which indicate the performance of the individual subsystems, and the extents to which individual functional requirements of the user and the housing system as a whole are satisfied. Recommendations for future work in this field are also discussed.
