AbstractThis study is aimed to investigate the general development of the textile industry in Thailand. The background and factors that cause the rapid growth of the textile industry in the past ten years are examined. The present structures of the industry are described. The growth of spinning, weaving, knitting and finishing of cotton and manmade fiber textiles is analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the promoted firms as data are relatively accurate and readily available. Analysis of the performance of the textile industry with regards to production, productivity, imports, exports, is made. Forecasts and trends of textile consumption in Thailand are projected. The present problems and obstacles encountered by local textile industry are examined. Technical studies on the industry are carried out. These include the production processes, quality control and technological change in general with reference to Thailand. Finally, strategies and policy implications for further development of the textile industry are proposed.
