| Abstract | Jute manufacturing industry of Bangladesh forms the economic
backbone of the country. However, presently it faces two major problems. They are: (1) competition from some other countries who have increased their jute production and thereby captured the market share
which Bangladesh used to monopolize; (2) the emergence of synthetic substitutes of jute which have captured a large market share of world jute. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prospect of jute
manufacturing industry of Bangladesh. The objectives were (1) to study the existing jute industrial system; (2) to study the effect of man-made
fiber on jute industry; and (3) to analyze the future prospect of jute products. No single available mathematical model proved suitable in forecasting the future market share that jute will have. Each model has shown some weaknesses in this particular case. However, a simple procedure has been developed for adapting available mathematical models for forecasting
technological substitution. The environmental interactions plays a
significant part in identifying a set of feasible alternative forecasts
from which a selection is made depending on the judgement of the analyst.
It has been found from the study that the synthetic substitutes will
capture 90% of the market share of world jute by 1989.
The future of jute is not as dark as it appears. The energy crisis
has given some hope to jute because the synthetic substitutes have been
directly affected by the energy crisis. However, it is only the price level and improvement in quality that will determine the future increase in the market of jute. |
