AbstractA procedure for the numerical solution of the equations of the unsteady free surface flow on a digital computer by Harley\'s linearized solution for application to flood routing in natural channel is presented. The prototype in this study is the reach of Nan River from Sirikit Darn to Tha-It, Uttradit, Thailand. The input of the linear model is the direct inflow hydrograph. An equivalent rectangular channel of the prototype is found so that the linearized equation would be applicable. Two parameters are inherent in the linear model, i.e. the reference discharge and the roughness coefficient which is found to be the most significant parameter. The computed hydrographs show good agreements with the observed hydrographs.
