AbstractThis study has been aimed at suggesting a framework to improving production management system of an automobile assembly plant in the developing countries of Asia, using Thailand as a reference) present system of production management has been studied The through questionnaire and personal interviews with managing directors of automobile assembly plants in Thailand. (Various approaches have been suggested to improve the system of production management. The importance of integrated production system, disaggregated outputs of management processes and cooperative effort of local assemblers in advertising has been stressed. The outputs of the system have been identified to be (1) stability (2)long term benefit; (3) sales volume in units of vehicles; (4) return on investment; and (5) market penetration. Sales volume, return on investment and market penetration have been identified as three key variables to represent the overall quality of business The effect of each approach on the quality of business considering all the local plants has been studied. The results indicate there is no effect on key variables and they mainly depend on the policy of the government toward tax structure and growth of the industry. The effect of approaches and a cut in import duty on C K D parts by 50 percent have been studied on stability, long term benefit and the sales volume for an individual assembly plant. The results indicate (1) there is significant improvement in stability of the system and long term benefits; (2) there is no significant difference in sales volume under the present government policy; and (3) there is much improvement in sales volume when the government outs a 50 percent of import duty on C K D parts. (It has been concluded that greater participation of automobile assemblers should be encouraged by the government in the policy making toward automobile industries.
