| Abstract | The high-rate oxidation pond may provide waste water treatment, water reclamation and act as a source of algal protein for livestock feed.
The effects of selected growth limiting factors on mass algal
culture through the use of pilot scale high-rate oxidation ponds have been studied. The three limiting factors studied were mixing, solar radiation and variations in loading on the pond system. The research was intended to reveal the effects of limiting factors on al gal growth and to improve pond operation techniques for the purpose of achieving higher a1gal yields. The mixing study revealed that there was little improvement in pond performance due to
different methods of mixing, furthermore, requirements for mixing were minimal. Unmixed ponds were successfully operated over a period of fifty days. Solar energy was observed to be a major growth limiting factor. Previously, work had been conducted on ponds under constant loading conditions. A prototype plant would be expected to receive waste which were varied in concentration and flow throughout the day. Experimental ponds were loaded with variable influent sewage flow to simulate actual loading conditions. Decreased loading during the night was found to be desirable in improving culture conditions. Higher yields were obtained using such variations in loading with the effluent
being continuously removed. |
