AbstractThis thesis includes the study of existing bus service along a selected route in Bangkok? reserved bus lanes for existing local buses along the selected route, and express bus skip stop operation along the same route. The route, 14-kilometers long route serving east-west demand, selected terminates at Tachang and Ekamai. Existing bus service was studied by direct manual sampling on buses and along the study route. A digital computer simulation program using FORTRAN IV language was developed to study bus operation on reserved lanes. Studies were limited to morning and evening peak periods. It was concluded that by reserving lanes for all local buses, a reduction of 30 percent in total travel time along the study route can be effected. A feasible plan of reserved lanes for express bus operation is recommended with an average of 42 percent, reduction in travel time compared to existing bus service. A break-even study of the economic characteristics of the express bus system is presented.
