AbstractAnaerobic pond performance was evaluated and the effects of waste strength on the removal of organic materials were studied. The optimum loading was assessed from loadings of approximately500, 1000, 3000 and 5000 lb BOD/day/acre. The pond with the applied load of 5000 lb BOD/day/acre resulted in the average removal of 4400 and 1800 lb BOD/day/ acre using a synthetic sewage feed of 1000 and 200 mg/1 BOD respectively. Minimum effluent BOD was observed from ponds with lower loads. No serious odor problem was encountered during the whole period of pond operation.
