AbstractThe experimental and analytical investigation of the variation in the transverse (slab) bending moment along the length of a folded plate roof, consisting of two identical units bearing a span-to-width ratio of five, and the performance of so called multipurpose reinforcing, designed to resist both transverse moment and in plane shears, is here reported. The distribution of transverse bending moments are examined by means of a perspex model with 5"x25"x0.25" plates to which was attached a mesh of SR-4 strain rosettes. The performance of the multipurpose reinforcing was studied by means of a reinforced concrete model with 30"xl50"xl.5" plates. The latter was subjected to two types of loading. First, a concentrated load was applied at the center of the ridge; second, a uniformly distributed pressure normal to the plate surfaces was generated. The strains in certain reinforcing bars were measured by means of SR-4 gages. Based on the experimental data gathered, pertinent conclusions are drawn and recommendations for the use of the multipurpose reinforcement are formulated. It is hoped that the findings of this investigation will contribute to the wider use of multipurpose reinforcing.
