AbstractThe objective of this study was to find a mathematical model which could be used to forecast the increase in agricultural land use associated with a highway improvement. Terrain was assumed to be the main factor that influenced agricultural land use along the highway. For convenience, the geometric alignment of the highway was employed to represent the terrain. The Friendship Highway in Thailand was chosen for this study. Changes in agricultural land use within a 3-kilometer band centered on the highway were measured from aerial photographs which covered the study area; the photographs were taken in 1953, two years prior to construction, and in 1960, two years after the highway was opened to traffic. The terrain was represented by the sum of the vertical gradient in integers and the metric¬ degree of horizontal curvature, also in integers; these values were integrated over half-kilometer segments of the highway center line. The resulting quantities were termed the composite alignment index. A correlation plot between the increase in agricultural land use, its antecedent land use, and the composite alignment index showed no apparent relationship. A mathematical analysis, based on the vacant land available for agriculture, also failed to yield a meaningful result. The only relationship that resulted from the analysis is that the distribution of the alignment index and the distribution of 1960 land use, arranged by similar index class intervals, were statistically similar. Study of the lateral distribution of cultivation showed the probable influence of the existing railway situated to the north of the Friendship Highway. From study of the changes in lateral distribution of cultivation which occurred between 1953 and 1960,an estimate was made of the probable limits of the zone of influence of the highway.
