AbstractA simple analytical method for the solution of bridge decks with polygonal stiffening arches, which are highly indeterminate structures, is developed in this thesis. The method\'s limitations are investigated and discussed. The theory developed was tested by an experimental study of a perspex model. Theoretical and experimental results agreed satisfactorily for stiff decks but the above mentioned theory was shown to be inadequate where flexible decks are involved. A further experimental investigation of the behavior of two types of polygonal arch joints, suitable for in-situ and for precast construction, respectively was made. In particular, the effect of joint construction on the buckling load of the arch segments was studied by means of three fairly large reinforced concrete models
